Abstract
The authors reviewed the medical records of 59 mentally ill criminals who had been referred to Yong-In Mental Hospital for the psychiatric evaluation by the court during the period from Apr. 1986 to Mar. 1993.
The results of this study were as follows.
1. Demographic, personal, familial, psychiatric, and criminal characteristics of the subjects in this study were similar to those of the others.
2. The inappropriate social support system and the isolation from the family members seemed to be important risk factors for crime of the mentally ill.
3. The poverty due to little chance of getting job became an important risk factor for crime, so vocational rehabilitation programs were needed for the psychiatric patients.
4. The majority of criminal behaviours by the mentally ill could be predicted and be prevented if regular psychiatric treatments were done.
5. The conclusion about the criminal rates or dangerousness of the mentally ill couldn¢¥ t be drawn because of methodological limitations of this study.
6. Undesirable tendency that the court referred the mentally ill criminals for the psychiatric evaluation only when the criminals have family members and contents of the crime were severe was found.
